Questions about Cavendish Farms Processes
What type of oil do you use?
Cavendish Farms uses only 100% vegetable oil in the preparation of all of our frozen potato products. This vegetable oil may contain one of more of the following oils: soybean oil and/or canola oil.
Do you use pesticides?
Crop protectants may be used while growing our potato crops. At Cavendish Farms we have rigorous controls in place to ensure that any protectants are applied in compliance with applicable government regulations and in respect to the environment.
Questions about Ingredients and Allergens
Do Cavendish Farms potato products contain any allergens?
Though our products are not all allergen free, Cavendish Farms potato products do not contain peanuts or tree nuts and do not have milk or egg ingredients. Some products produced at Cavendish Farms do contain wheat flour. There is an ingredient declaration on all of our products listing the ingredients including any allergens and anyone with allergies should always read the ingredient declarations as an added precaution.
Do Cavendish Farms products contain gluten?
For our frozen potato products we cannot guarantee that our products are gluten-free. There is a small chance of low level contamination (in the parts per billion range) in our ingredients. This low level of contamination would be extremely small, if it existed at all. There is an ingredient declaration on all of our products listing the ingredients including any allergens and anyone with allergies should always read the ingredient declarations as an added precaution.
Our fresh potato products are naturally gluten free.
Are Cavendish Farms products vegan?
We cannot make a claim of vegan on any of our products, as we do not have the proper certification. However, the majority of our products do not contain animal by-products. Please always remember to consult the ingredient declaration.
Are Cavendish Farms products nut-free?
At Cavendish Farms we do not process or have any nut-containing ingredients in our processing facilities. ‘Nut-free’ is a claim we cannot support however as our facilities are not nut-free facilities and there is always a small chance of low level contamination.
Are Cavendish Farms products soy-free?
All of our products have an oil statement that, at minimum, states "contains soy and/or canola oil". However, Cavendish Farms uses soybean oil that is highly refined to remove all traces of the allergen. Some products do in fact contain soy-based ingredients however. There is an ingredient declaration on all of our products listing the ingredients including any allergens and anyone with allergies should always read the ingredient declarations as an added precaution.
Your frozen potato ingredients list can include 'colour'. What colour are you referring to?
The colour used in our products is simply a combination of paprika and caramel, which adds visual appeal to our French fries or other frozen potato products.
Questions about French Fries and Potatoes
What causes black spots on frozen French fries?
Black spots are usually bruises which are caused by rough handling. One type of bruising happens when the skin is broken. The potato forms a thicker layer of skin to protect and/or heal the wound.
The second type of bruising shows up just under the skin or deeper inside the potato as a blackspot. This happens when potatoes are dropped more than six inches or something heavy is placed on top of them.
Can potatoes be part of a healthy diet and lifestyle?
Potatoes are healthy! One medium, baked potato only contains about 100 calories. Baked or boiled potatoes are already conveniently portioned, making it easy to control the calories. Remember, it is the extras, such as butter or sour cream added during or after the preparation, that increase the number of calories!
For delicious and healthy potato topping ideas, try substituting these low-fat alternatives: yogurt with chives; whipped low-fat cottage cheese blended with lemon juice; grated parmesan cheese; calorie-reduced salad dressings; or a mixture of herbs.
